He took over his father's chair in Basel, having won the Prize of the Paris Academy on four occasions.

In 1756, Maupertuis left Berlin and stayed with Johann for the next three years until he dies in 1759.
In 1782, when Daniel died, Johann became one of the eight foreign memebrs of the Paris Academy.
Paris Academy Prize He won the prize four times

- 1737 : Design of anchor, he won one of three sections to the prize
- 1741 : constructed a capstan
- 1746 : magnetism, with Daniel; shared with two others (Euler, Du Tour)
