• The Monmouth Canal has a 40 kilometer stretch without locks, the longest stretch without locks in Britain.

• In 1945 67 German POWs escaped from Island Farm Camp, Bridgend. This was the biggest break-out in Britain but they were all re-captured.

• The largest pumped storage hydro electric scheme in Europe is situated at Tanygrisau, making use of one of the regions most abundant resources, water.

• Mining for copper ore on Parys Mountain in Anglesey was started in 1768, and it was soon to become the world's biggest opencast copper mine. Its run-down in the early nineteenth century caused great distress in the area.
