    Question to Southern Railways

    Your message :

Why does a weekly season ticket include Xmas Day and Boxing Day when no trains are running on those days? It seems illogical to issue me with a ticket valid up to the end of 26th December

    Dear Brian

Thank you for contacting us on 28 December 2012 regarding your season ticket. Please accept my apologies for the delay in our response.

The ticket is valid for 7 days of the day you purchase. This will include public holidays as some train operating companies still run a service.

If you wish to contact us further regarding your query, please contact our Customer Service team directly at comments@southernrailway.com, by phone on 08451 27 29 20 or in writing to:

    Taking the matter further

    Your message :

Could you tell me which companies operate train services between Portsmouth and Bognor Regis on Christmas Day and Boxing Day?

    Dear Brian

Thank you for contacting us on 17 February 2013 regarding your enquiry. Please accept my apologies for the delay in our response.

I can confirm that First Great Western and South West Trains operate a Boxing Day service. However, this is not particular to the route you require.

Passengers are to make an informed decision as to whether they would need there (sic) ticket to cover these days if not required then they would make a decision as to which ticket they need. Passengers are advised to check service availability before booking travel.

Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused. .

2013

18 October

The 1356 from Bognor arrives in Barnham with the Portsmouth train already in. As usual, dash through the subway by which time the Portsmouth train is already moving away from the platform.

15 October

The 1356 from Bognor arrives in Barnham with the Portsmouth train already in. As usual dash through the subway by which time the Portsmouth train is still there stationary, but with its doors locked.

26 August

The 1530 from Bognor arrives in Barnham with the Portsmouth train on the other side of the island platform, with doors open. By time we stop and rush over, the guard is getting in and closing the doors. As usual, vent my anger by banging on his window.

15 August

The 1338 from Bognor arrives in Barnham and experiences an identical scenario as the day before. I time the interval between the Portsmouth train setting off and me standing on the edge of 'its' platform : - 20 seconds

14 August

The 1338 from Bognor arrives in Barnham just as the Portsmouth train on the other side of the island platform moves off

19 July

The 1256 from Bognor arrived in Barnham at the same time as the Portsmouth train. Events roll out as expected - managed to give the Portsmouth train a 'few blows' as it rolled out of the station leaving us behind.

22 March

Catch the 0608 train at Portsmouth which then gets delayed en route. Arrive at Barnham with the Bognor train (the one I normally catch) on the other platform - which departs just as I am ascending from the subway (as though they didn't know that there are people from the Portsmouth train who regularly change on to the Bognor train, Bognor being about 6/7 minutes away where the train terminates).

11 March

Arrive at Bognor at 1310. Screens are showing details of possible cancellation(s). The 1330 is obviously delayed coming in. There is a general sense of confusion - it's hard to describe the situation properly but there is a sense that the staff are not helping by virtue of a seemingly passive attitude. Eventually get on the 1339 to Barnham, 'encouraged' by a member of staff but then the "1330" London train arrives and then departs before us!!

14 February

Catch the 1339 from Bognor again with similar outcome at Barnham as two days beforehand

12 February

Catch the 1339 from Bognor. See a Portsmouth train departing before we have entered Barnham station. According to my watch we arrived at 1343, whereas the Portsmouth leaves at 1342 according to the timetable.

8 February

Catch the 1356 from Bognor. At Barnham there is no sign of the Portsmouth train. It might have been cancelled but suspect that it might have already left.

30 January

Catch the 1527 from Bognor. Enter Barnham island platform with Portsmouth train on the adjacent platform - which starts off before our doors open.

2012

31 December

Catch the 1338 from Bognor which pulls into Platform 1 with a Portsmouth train on Platform 2. The Portsmouth train pulls out of the station about 20 seconds after we disembark from the Bognor train (leaving us behind)

7 November

Caught the 1530 from Bognor which arrived on the island platform as a Portsmouth train was waiting on the adjacent platform, with its doors open. The guard blows his whistle just as our train is stationary and we are waiting for our doors to open. Within the period, best measured in seconds, that it takes us to get over to the other platform the Portsmouth train has all its doors locked (but is still stationary on the platform). Get a good chance to vent my frustration by banging on the guard's compartment as the train leaves without us.

1 October

Expect to catch the 1508 from Bognor Regis which appeared to be cancelled for some reason. Changed trains at Barnham onto a Portsmouth train which announced it was terminating at Fratton because it was running late.

Had a new experience at Fratton when the 1625 to Portsmouth closed its doors while me and a couple of others were still queueing to get on, and it sailed off leaving us looking like melons on the platform.

26 September

Catch the 1527 from Bognor. This enters Barnham on platform 1 while a Portsmouth train is on Platform 2 on the other end of the island platform. This Portsmouth train draws away as we are parallel to it (but still moving)

6 July

Draw into Platform 1 while the Portsmouth train is waiting on Platform 2 on the same island platform. The Portsmouth train departs before our doors are opened.

1 June

Get the 1356 from Bognor which, as usual arrives at Barnham at the same time as the Portsmouth train (the Portsmouth train is not yet stationary when we arrive). Nevertheless by the time I dash over to the opposite platform, the doors on the Portsmouth train are locked. Just see the conductor shut his door, so run over there and when it is obvious I can't get on, take the opportunity to express my mood by banging on the window a couple of times.

25 May

Almost identical to 22 May - enter Barnham Station on the island platform, with a stationary Portsmouth train on the adjacent platform. The Portsmouth train sails away before our doors are opened.

22 May

Enter Barnham Station on the island platform, with a stationary Portsmouth train on the adjacent platform. The Portsmouth train sails away before our doors are opened.

The train I finally get terminates at Portsmouth and Southsea (instead of Portsmouth Harbour). This is okay for me but is indicative of a situation which occurs quite often. If it had terminated at Fratton I would have been less pleased.

30th April

Leave work at 1500. Chaos on Barnham Station due to a signals failure in Portsmouth area. At 1547 get a train to Chichester where we are told that we can use the 700 bus. Go over to the bus station but we are refused permission to travel on the 700, so return to railway station, where a bus is loading. Have to wait for another bus and luckily two arrive at the same time, so get a place. Arrive at Havant Station but as we walk onto the platform, the Portsmouth train shuts its doors. As it sails away I take the opportunity to bang on the window adjacent to the guard (which doesn't do my hand any good!). This is now almost 1700, two hours after I left work

26th April

Enter Barnham Station on Platform 1. The Portsmouth train is on Platform 2, about 15 meters away on the other side of the island platform. As we enter Platform 1, the doors are open on the Portsmouth train, by the time we walk over to it, they are locked, and the train sails off without us

Main problems mentioned here are to do with connections at Barnham Station. I travel regularly from Bognor Regis to Portsmouth which always involves changing at Barnham.

The problem is that trains will not stay around to pick up passengers from other recently-arrived trains - even though station staff etc. know full well that there are potential passengers on these latter trains.

There appear to be no connections anymore, for the reason that the 'benchmark' for efficiency relies on punctuality. I am getting poor service from the railways, and the reason I am getting poor service is so that the railways can announce that they are providing a good service.
