  • Wilhelm Voigt, the “Hauptmann of Köpenick”. In October 1906, he dressed up as an army captain, and ordered 10 soldiers to accompany him by train to Köpenick, where he arrested the Bürgermeister and clerk, and appropriated 4000 marks (apparently overlooking 2 million marks in securities). Originally, he got away with it, but whilst in prison for another offence, he boasted about the incident to another prisoner, and was therefore exposed. Inspiration behind Zuckmayer’s play, which satirised the Prussian respect for uniforms. Apparently the Kaiser ordered his release from a four-year sentence.
  • Voltaire In 1750 he left the court of Louis 15. and took up an appointment at Friedrich 2.’s court., although relations cooled between the two and he was asked to leave Prussia in 1753.
