- Friedrich Ebert First mayor of East Berlin

- Kurt Eisner Born in Berlin in 1867, but settled in München before the First World War.
He was a journalist for the SPD, and then for the press in Bavaria. His opposition to the First World War lead him to join the USPD.
On 7. November 1918 a protest was staged against the war. This escalated into a revolt and within hours Eisner was able to proclaim a Bavarian Republic, with himself as Minister-President. Ludwig III was advised to leave München. These events pre-dated revolutionary events elsewhere in Deutschland.
Elections were held on 12 January 1919, producing a vote of 35% for the SPD, but less for Eisner's own party.
He was assassinated in 21. February 1919 by a right-wing aristocrat Count Arco-Valley, but reaction to this act led to a fully Communist government in Bavaria, probably the exact opposite of what Arco-Valley intended. Eisner's funeral was attended by about 100.000 people.
